Activation of muscles is usually triggered by a calcium signal. Skeletal muscles may oscillate in length under non-physiological conditions. Calcium independent muscle activities lead to spontaneous emergence of contraction waves in muscle fibers. Waves appear spontaneously, propagate bidirectional within the fibers and disappear. A mathematical description including the basic muscle components, which are affected by stress and strain, reveals a similar pattern.
