Muscles can show excitable dynamics. A small perturbations leads to large-scale dynamic effects.
The dynamic variables Z and Q do not change anymore when a trajectory is exactly on a nullcline (red and blue lines). Small amplitude oscillations around the crossing of the nullclines can be perturbed and lead to large scale changes of the dynamic variables.
